Our WDFL Premier team started the season with a good win away to Glencormac United and if it was goals you were looking for Ryders Field was the place to be. On a wet miserable afternoon both teams served up a goal fest of a match with Rovers winning a twelve goal thriller 7-5. It was a topsy turvy encounter, first the home side went one up before Rovers stormed back with two goals to go 2-1 in front. It didn't take long for Glencormac to restore parity at 2-2. It was the type of game you couldn't take your eyes off as every attack had goal written all over it. Rovers raced into a 4-2 lead and just when they looked to have control of the game Glencormac hit back to make it 4-3 but Rovers went up the other end to restore their two goal cushion to make it 5-3. Yet again the home side reduced the deficit to one goal at 5-4. Then Rovers had a purple patch when they fired home two quick fire goal to give themselves a three goal cushion. Glencormac pulled another one back to make it 7-5 and this proved to be the end of the goals. Sam Brown blitzed Glencormac with a four goal haul, Brian Harrington blasted home what is already been talked as a goal of the season contender and Riain Sweetman found the net too. The last goal came courtesy of a wicked deflection. The lads were understrength today so the result was all the more impressive. Two lads that came in were Shane Lincoln and youths player Sean Murphy and both impressed in a good team display.
