It's was first versus second today, as Rovers travelled to take on Gorey Rangers with just 3 points seperating them and Rovers with a game in hand. The ladies started as they have most games on the front foot, with Niamh O'Brien hitting the cross bar in the first few minutes but it was a tight game for the opening fifteen minutes as each team were trying to find gaps. Gorey tried a few over the top balls to bypass our defence, but Amy Kavanagh was alert to each attack coming out to claim each attempt. The opening goal came around the twenty minute mark with Niamh O'Brien making a great run into box from Sinead Keogh's pass to make it 1-0. Rovers started to put pressure on the Goery defence, and it paid off with Sophie Byrne getting the second of the day. The third came from a lovely bit of skill from Louise Corrigan to make some space for herself in the middle of the park and then push forward to get into a shooting position and fire home. At this stage, the girls started to enjoy the game and play some 1-2 movements. Gorey didn't put their heads down and kept putting pressure on our centre back duo of Anne Muprhy and Louise Johnson. The next goal came from quick play from Amy to play a short ball out to her left back Aoife Caffrey, who played a ball over the top to her sister Niamh and with Gorey's keeper coming out Niamh chipped the keeper and the ball nestled in the back of the net. Rovers went in at half time 4-0 up. Gorey Rangers came into their own at the start of the second half, hitting the crossbar twice. Rovers soaked up the pressure and nearly got a fifth goal with a smart pass from Niamh into Lucy McGettigan who raced onto the ball and got a lovely shot off which would have been in the back of the net any other day with the Gorey keeper pulling off a great save. It was Louise Corrigan who got the fifth and Niamh O'Brien who got the sixth of the game to put the game to bed. The ladies have put themselves into a great position now with every player from the starting 11, and the subs (Eve Kelly, Katie Verbruggen, and Elaine Kileen) putting in great team spirit that will see them go far.
